Grammar Basics: Sentence Structure

Sentence structure is the way various words in a sentence are arranged so as to form a logical and grammatically correct sentence. The sentence structure of your writing includes where the noun and verb fall within an individual sentence. To improve our writing, it's important to understand what these basic structures are and how to use them effectively. The 4 types of sentence structure are 1) simple sentence 2) compound sentence 3) complex sentence 4) compound-complex sentence. A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb. A compound sentence contains at least two independent clauses. These two independent clauses can be combined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction or with a semicolon. A complex sentence contains at least one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. A compound-complex sentence contains at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. One way to begin studying basic sentence structures is to consider the traditional parts of speech (also called word classes): nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and interjections.
