About the video

In this video of Vedic Maths, we will be learning how to calculate the square of a number quickly. We will be discussing two methods of calculating squares upto three digit numbers. This method is very much useful for children of class 9 and above. Square of a number refers to multiplication of a number with itself. That is, Y x Y = Y2, where Y is a number. The prerequisite is to find the square of a number, it is necessary to remember the squares upto number 10.

First, the trick for 11-20 squares. Here, consider 10 as a base, and let's try to calculate the square of 11. Now, 11 is one more than the base. Therefore, 112 + 12 = __ 1 (Square of 1 is 1). To get the LHS of the answer, perform 11 + 1 = 12. Therefore, 112 = 121. Second, the trick for 21-30 squares. Here, 20 is a sub base because 20 = 2 x 10. Now, let’s try to find the square of 24. Now, 24 is 4 more than the sub - base. Therefore, 242 + 42 = __6 (square of 4 is 16, but base is 10, hence only 1 digit to be at the RHS. The 1 of 16 is carried to the LHS). To compute the answer of LHS, 24 + 4 = 28. But, since 20 is a sub-base, we will do 28 x 2 = 56. Now, 1 is carried forward. Therefore, 56 + 1 = 57. Hence, 242 = 576. Lastly, the formula for Based Method for 2 Digit and 3 Digit Numbers is - (ab)2 = a2/2ab/b2 , (abc)2 = a2 /2ab/ 2ac+b2 /2bc/ b2. Here, ‘/’ indicates balancing. Hence, we will be using the balancing method to get the final answer. Stay Tuned to learn two more methods of calculating squares !
