Revision of Basic Concepts
This practice worksheet deals with the Vilokanam Sutra used for Addition, and Nikhilam Navatah Charamam Dasatah or, all from 9 last from 10 methods, and the Vinculum Method. Let's revisit!
Addition
What is Vilokanam ?
The word “Vilokanam” means observation. It is called spark addition because within a spark of time we can find the sum. This method helps to find the sum of numbers by just looking at them. One can practise this method to speed up their calculation speed. Now, let’s solve some problems using the Vilokanam method.
Q1. Add by calculating for tens.
- 45 + 77 =
- 39 + 14 =
- 18 + 99 =
- 23 + 77 =
- 92 + 89 =
Q2. Add by calculate for numbers totaling 10.
- 4 + 7 + 9 + 3
- 53 + 43 + 33 + 23
- 79 + 82 + 11 + 05 + 33
- 64 + 71 + 27 + 98 + 103
- 61 + 40 + 130 + 32 + 07
Subtraction
What is Nikhilam Navatah Charamam Dasatah Method ?
Subtraction in Vedic Maths is called “Vyavkalanam”. It is considered to be the easiest method/sutra when compared to any other conventional method. This worksheet is on Nikhilam Navatah Charamam Dasatah or, all from 9 last from 10 methods. Under this method, we subtract every digit from 9 but the rightmost digit from 10. Whenever there are 0s at the end of any number, we ignore them in the beginning and apply. All from 9 last from 10 at the remaining digits. After computing them, we will add 0s as it is.
What is Vinculum?
Under the Vinculum method of subtraction, there is usage of a bar on top of numbers. This bar is called a vinculum. It indicates that the respective number is negative and the number without a bar is positive. For example, if there is a number, say 81, such that there is a bar on top of 1. It indicates that 1 is negative and 8 is positive. Hence, the number actually is 80 - 1 i.e. 79.
Q3. Subtract by calculating for all from 9 and last from 10.
- 1000 – 888 =
- 10,000 – 3321 =
- 100 – 78 =
- 100,000 – 15077 =
- 1000,000 – 123456 =
- 1000 – 730 =
- $10 – $4.32 =
- 5 – 0.88 =
- $100 – $7.43 =
- 1 – 0.6081 =
