What is the Square of a Number?

Square of a number refers to multiplication of a number with itself. That is, Y x Y = Y2, where Y is a number. When a number or integer (not a fraction) is multiplied by itself, the resultant is called a 'Square Number'. For example, 3 multiplied by 3 is equal to 3 x 3 or 32.

How to use this method?

Under this method, base refers to numbers that are of the form 10n, where ‘n’ is any natural number. Therefore, 10n =10, 100, 1000, 10000…where n = 1, 2, 3, 4…so on, respectively. In order to carry out this method, we need to find out the base and find the difference between the base and the number.

  • The answer will be formed in two parts, RHS and LHS. The RHS part will consist of the square of the number.
  • This number is the difference between the base and the numbers whose square we need to find.
  • Note that, the digits in the RHS will be equal to the number of zeroes in the base.
  • Lastly, to find the LHS, add or subtract the number with the number whose square we need to find. This depends on the relationship with the base.
