Tourism fuels economic growth and fosters cultural exchange; however, it can also create a strain on local culture and resources. The negative impacts can be avoided if the necessary steps are taken by the authorities while allowing the benefits to flow in.

On a positive note, tourism boosts the economy of a country multifold.  By creating jobs at many levels, it helps locals improve their standard of living. It also propels improvement in infrastructure, which is required to accommodate the visiting tourists. For example,  building of hotels and other utility structures to help visitors have a comfortable stay is common at any tourist destination. Thus, jobs are created at all levels, boosting the local economy.

However, the negative effects of tourism cannot be ruled out. The influx of tourists leads to cultural erosion. The local population often alters its culture to make it more appealing to tourists. Over time, cultural originality is lost, and the modern generation might lose awareness of it.  For instance, Indian folk dances are given a  modern twist by including Bollywood dance moves and music in traditional performances, resulting in the current generation being unaware of the original dance form.

Implementing sustainable practices can help destinations balance economic benefits with the preservation of culture and resources. These practices can include regulating tourist numbers, encouraging responsible tourism, and supporting local culture. For example, increasing entry fees can restrict access to serious visitors. As the footfall reduces, the burden on local resources like water and energy will also reduce.

To conclude, even though tourism helps a country flourish, it may lead to a dilution of cultural values and resource depletion. Thus, care needs to be taken to maintain the right balance so that the authenticity of the place is not lost and local communities are not adversely impacted.
