PTE vs. IELTS: Big Picture

Before we delve into the minute details of their differences, let's begin by painting a broader picture. It's essential to establish this overview to help you grasp the relevance as a test-taker. Consider, for example, whether it's worthwhile to delve into their distinctions. Do you value the flexibility of choosing test dates, or do you have a preference for an alternative test-taking mode? Your path will become clearer once we explore their significant differentiators.

Computer-based test or Paper-based test:

The IELTS exam offers candidates the choice between a paper-based exam and a computer-based exam. In contrast, the PTE exam is entirely computer-based, where candidates take the test on a computer, and a computer also assesses their responses without any human intervention. Additionally, the speaking section of the IELTS exam involves a face-to-face conversation with an examiner. In contrast, in the case of the PTE exam, candidates speak into a microphone connected to the computer.

Test duration:

The total time duration of the IELTS exam is 3 hours on the day of the main written exam, along with an additional 11 to 14 minutes for the speaking test, which is conducted either one day prior or one day after the main exam. In contrast, the total duration of the PTE exam is a continuous 2-hour session.

Number of Questions:

The IELTS exam has a fixed number of questions, whereas the PTE follows an adaptive approach and the number of questions in any of the sections may vary each time. What that means is that the level of difficulty of the questions asked in PTE depend on the test taker. It might not affect the number of questions that the test taker gets but it certainly affects the difficulty level.

For example, in the PTE Reading section, if you answer an initial question correctly, the next question might be slightly more challenging. Conversely, if you answer a question incorrectly, the subsequent question may be less difficult. This adaptive approach allows the test to more accurately assess your skill level, providing a more tailored evaluation. However in the PTE, the Speaking and Writing sections are not adaptive in the same way.

Whereas in IELTS the difficulty of questions does not change. It stays the same for everyone.

University/College Acceptance:

A significant and noteworthy point of differentiation lies in the number of educational institutions accepting PTE scores versus IELTS scores for college admission requirements. While IELTS enjoys widespread recognition and acceptance by immigration authorities and educational establishments in various countries, PTE is progressively gaining recognition. The hesitation surrounding PTE's recognition is not due to test type or the level of trust in the administering authority but rather because it is a relatively new entrant into the field. Many top colleges around the world have already begun accepting PTE scores, while more traditional and conservative institutions may take some time to adopt new standards. Nonetheless, the progress is swift, and Pearson, the company behind PTE, anticipates widespread recognition by the end of this year.

Notably, on May 12, 2023, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Canadian government's immigration authority, announced that by the end of the year, Canada will recognize PTE scores for all Permanent Immigration programs, including student direct stream (SDS), economic migration, and non-SDS academic admissions. Furthermore, esteemed institutions like McGill University, the University of Toronto, and the University of British Columbia already accept PTE scores. In fact, many of our students applying to German universities prefer PTE as their preferred English proficiency test.

PTE vs IELTS: Exam Pattern & Structure

To start, a significant contrast between the PTE and IELTS exam patterns lies in their approach to testing language skills. In IELTS, each skill is assessed individually, which means that you are tested on listening, reading, speaking, or writing separately. In contrast, the PTE exam integrates these skills, requiring you to perform tasks that combine multiple language abilities simultaneously. This distinctive exam pattern is a reflection of the underlying philosophies of each test and is an outcome of the evolution of language assessment.

PTE, being a more recent addition to the English proficiency testing landscape, subscribes to the idea that languages are interrelated and cannot be assessed in isolation. Some believe that this integration approach is the most effective way to evaluate language proficiency. While well-established tests like TOEFL have been around for quite some time and enjoyed popularity even before IELTS gained prominence, the ultimate outcome of this competition is yet to be determined.

This evolving landscape leaves educational institutions with the challenge of adapting to these changes and making informed decisions regarding which tests they accept. Our job as test coaching centres is to give you the best available resources to prepare and knowledge to help you make the right decisions at the right time.

Moving on, let's understand the nuances of the examination pattern, its sections, and structure for PTE and IELTS.

PTE vs. IELTS: Listening module

The first and foremost difference between PTE and IELTS listening module is at the source level. The conversations and monologues that you listen to in IELTS are all related to situations in social scenarios, while PTE exclusively sources its recordings from academic materials like classroom lectures, webinars and so on.

In IELTS there are only 4 sets of recordings and 40 questions, which makes it challenging. The questions asked are also of a higher difficulty level like: sentence completion, map or diagram labelling, and answer matching tasks.

In the PTE exam, candidates are expected to respond to 12 to 20 questions within a time frame of 30 to 43 minutes. These questions include: summarizing spoken text, multiple-choice (single and multiple answers), filling in the blanks, highlighting incorrect summaries, selecting missing words, and writing from dictation.

In PTE questions are to identify incorrect summaries, find incorrect words, and participate in dictation exercises. Besides the differences, the foundational skills they need to acquire in both the exams are quite similar.

PTE vs. IELTS: Reading module

The structure of the reading sections in IELTS and PTE Academic exams differs significantly. The text in the PTE Academic exam typically consists of individual texts, with one question per text. This format allows candidates to more easily move on to the next text in case they struggle to understand a particular one.

In IELTS there are fewer passages and more questions per passage. The skills required are the same in both the types: understand the meaning of the text, identify the theme, purpose and tone of the text. Similar strategies are to be employed in answering these questions: skimming, scanning and focussing on the keywords.

PTE vs. IELTS: Writing module

Since skills tested in PTE and IELTS exams are the same when it comes to the writing module, they do not need different types of preparation. That means that you can give either of the two exams without needing any extra effort. Although it applies to all other sections, with adequate practice of attempting different types of questions asked.

Beyond the similarity in the skills tested, the PTE writing module is different from IELTS in only one question out of the two questions, where you have to read a passage and summarise it in one line of upto 75 words.

In IELTS writing tasks, both the prompts are simpler, in the way that one is asked to write a passage based on the question prompt given in the form of text or text and image.

PTE vs. IELTS: Speaking module

The skills tested in IELTS Speaking and PTE speaking test might be quite similar but the way these tests are conducted is quite different. Here are some main points one should be know of:

IELTS speaking is conducted like an interview in an interactive format with the examiner. In PTE, students record their answers in the microphone.

The questions asked in PTE are integrated with other skills. For instance in Retell Lecture, you listen to the audio and then repeat the verbatim in the microphone. You are not just being tested for your oral fluency and pronunciation but also for your ability to understand what is said in the audio. Different from this respective question is the Describe Image question in which one has to describe an image given in the most logical and coherent way in fluent grammatically correct sentences. A lot of students find this section pretty challenging.

In IELTS speaking the questions are mostly about students personal life and preferences. Some students find it difficult to talk about themselves. One can learn to give intelligent responses by enough practice though.

PTE vs IELTS: Score Comparison

The scoring system of the PTE exam differs significantly from that of the IELTS exam. In the IELTS exam, candidates receive band scores on a scale from zero to nine. These band scores are provided for listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The scores in these four categories are then added together and divided by 4 to determine the candidate's overall band score. Most universities and government organizations generally accept scores between 6.5 and 7.5.

In contrast, the PTE exam uses a scoring system that ranges from 10 to 90, with 10 being the lowest and 90 being the highest. Candidates are awarded separate scores for writing and speaking, reading, and listening, which are later combined to determine the candidate's final score. Most universities and government organizations typically accept scores between 65 and 73.

PTE Academic vs. IELTS: Acceptance

The IELTS Academic exam is globally accepted by more than 11,500 organisations including universities, professional bodies, and employers. The IELTS General Training test is accepted for migration and work visa purposes in all countries, including,  Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

However, the PTE Academic is accepted for study applications by thousands of academic programs all across the globe.

PTE vs IELTS: Test Results and Validity

The results of the IELTS test are typically available within 13 days after the exam date for the paper-based test or 4 to 5 days after the computer-based exam. IELTS scores remain valid for 2 years, whether you take the academic or general training exam. Candidates can take the test multiple times to improve their band score, but there should be a minimum gap of at least five days.

On the other hand, in the case of the PTE exam, results are usually received within 2 to 5 working days. PTE scores also remain valid for 2 years, after which the candidate's PTE score is removed from the official PTE website.

PTE vs IELTS: Availability of exam dates

Any candidate planning to take the IELTS exam should verify the availability of test dates in their specific area on the official IELTS exam website. The IELTS general training exam is conducted on only 24 fixed days throughout the year, whereas the IELTS academic exam is held for 48 days annually. Test centers for IELTS can be found at different locations in 140 countries worldwide.

In India there are 50+ test centres offering available dates for booking. You can find your nearest IELTS test centre by going to their official IELTS test centre India page and book the date that suits you for your test. You can watch this video to learn how to book your IELTS test in India.

On the other hand, the PTE test is conducted in more than 400 test centers across 117 countries and the test dates are available round the year. Moreover, PTE exam dates are typically more convenient and readily available at all test centers. The PTE exam is conducted more frequently than the IELTS exam, making it advisable for candidates to check the available dates in their location. There are 40 plus test centres in India with many different dates available for the test. All you need to do is go to their official PTE test centre page and find a centre near your location.

PTE Academic vs. IELTS: Which one is easier?

After reading through the exam format and types of questions asked in each of these exams, you must have realised that the perception of which one is "easier" often depends on an individual's proficiency and comfort with the English language. Since IELTS has been in existence for a longer time, and its format is well-established. This can be an advantage for those who like the predictability of a well-known test. But PTE’s variety of task types can be advantageous to test takers. There are some questions which are much easier to score, which does not happen in the case of the IELTS exam.

Some test takers also like integrated skills, it can be advantageous if one is weaker in a certain area. Besides that the flexibility of test taking dates benefit students who have time restrictions. On the other hand, IELTS 'simpler scoring system makes it easy to understand as compared to PTE.

In conclusion, the perceived difficulty of PTE Academic vs. IELTS can vary greatly from person to person. It's essential to consider individual strengths and preferences when choosing between the two tests. Additionally, taking PTE mock tests as well as IELTS mock tests and seeking guidance from educators can help test-takers make an informed decision and prepare effectively for their chosen exam.

How to prepare for the PTE or IELTS exam?

Like I discussed in the previous sections in the article, there is no difference in the preparation of the two exams. One can easily opt to give either of the two at any point of time in their path to preparation. The skills tested are the same in all the sections. However, what is very important is to practice attempting the questions. They both have varied types of questions, and the strategy to answer them is different in most cases, except a few.

In IELTS listening there are 14 types of questions one is asked, although all the types do not make it to the real test, but you have to prepare to answer them. In the PTE listening test, there are different types of questions which require one to read and comprehend, or write and express. It is very important for one to be familiar with answering these questions.
