OPINION ESSAY (PARTIAL AGREEMENT)
Question:
People living in the 21st century have a better quality of life than people who lived in previous times. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Answer:
It is an undeniable fact that the world has been advancing rapidly since the beginning of this century. While some argue that the former times were better, others insist that people enjoy a rather convenient lifestyle today. In my opinion, despite the evolution of technology which has strongly enhanced the well-being of humans, it is not the only element contributing to a comfortable, healthy life.
Firstly, revolutionary developments in the medical sciences have drastically improved health assistance in the current society. For instance, the fatality rates for epidemic diseases such as cholera, plague, measles, and polio have been quite high. In contrast, due to the advancements in medical sciences, these diseases have been nearly eradicated from the planet. While new diseases such as COVID-19 or Monkeypox emerge occasionally, we are better prepared to tackle them efficiently with suitable scientific cures.
Secondly, the tools, gadgets and engineering available in the present is pushing the boundaries of technological breakthroughs. High-speed transportation, gadgets, devices and machines collectively contribute to the quality and convenience of life. For example, earlier, travelling from Japan to Africa is an easy feat which just takes a few hours. Additionally, the invention of the internet has truly changed the world in terms of information sharing, connectivity, communication and data access. Such scientific evolution has resulted in unimaginable and heightened benefits.
However, these developments have several drawbacks as well. Due to the rapid facilities, not only have humans formed an extremely sedentary lifestyle leading to the rise of several health issues such as obesity and heart problems, but have also caused catastrophic environmental problems such as pollution and global warming.
To conclude, it is undoubtedly true that the present-day standard of living is substantially better than the olden days. In my opinion, although the progression in healthcare, engineering and communication have enhanced the overall life quality in the 21st century, they have parallelly created a new set of impediments with their own complications.
