Question

More and more people today are moving away from where their friends and family live.Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

Answer

With the increased globalisation, moving to new neighbourhoods, cities or even countries for education or promising work opportunities has become a popular trend. However, this may require people to separate from their families and friends. While there are numerous social downsides to this, the positives surpass the disadvantages of this movement.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that living away from our already established social network can weaken social bonds. Relocating to new sites is often stressful for individuals as the time spent apart can lead to strenuous emotional connections and inter-personal challenges. Additionally, stepping into an unfamiliar territory may sometimes cause forced interactions as the person is struggling to build relationships. For instance, a student who moves abroad for higher education will likely step out of his way to make new friends, and may lose connections with his former mates. Over time, they may also feel lonely due to the absence of their familiar loved ones to share special moments with them.

On the other hand, moving out of one’s comfort zone has copious advantages as well. Not only does it foster independence and responsibility, but it also makes individuals self-aware of their own strengths and weaknesses. For instance, a student who relocates to another place often becomes self-dependent and responsible for himself and his surroundings. 

Furthermore, encountering uncomfortable situations or people help in the overall holistic development of an individual. For instance, a person who is well-exposed to people from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds allows them to develop distinct, critical thinking styles. Such exposure fosters adaptability and creative problem-solving abilities, which could then be utilised to solve numerous issues in their native hometowns or countries. 

Moving away to a new place, far from one’s hometown is a rising trend across the world. Despite the drawbacks such as weakened familial bonds, it is far more advantageous as it is a step that requires courage to challenge oneself and also facilitates maturity in the right direction.
