Question: Some people think it is better for one single legal system throughout the world. Others say countries should have their own law. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Answer:
There are some who believe that a single judicial system across the globe would be more efficient. However, I agree with those who opine that each country should have separate rules and regulations.
On the one hand, those who believe that a homogenised legal system would be better, think so because it would probably make the process of serving justice easier. If this becomes a reality, criminals who escape to other countries may still have to face a court of law and serve the sentence given to them. Consequently, the rate of crime may diminish. To illustrate, many defaulters like Vijay Malya are living peaceful lives in foreign countries which would not be possible if the entire world had one single legal system.
On the other hand, it is highly recommended that every nation has its own set of rules and regulations because of cultural differences. Certain crimes may be fairly common in one part of the globe but non-existent in another part. For instance, the act of female foeticide is more common in Asian countries as compared to the Western world.
In my opinion, if there were just a single legal system, the staff would expect identical pay packages across all nations since the work done by them would be similar. However, it would not be practical considering the different values of the currency of each country. The value of the Indian Rupee, for example, is far different from that of a dollar.
To conclude, although having a single legal system worldwide would be fruitful in controlling the crime rate, I believe that it is for the betterment of each nation to have its own independent judiciary, given the fact that each country has its own set of crimes to deal with.
