This IELTS Speaking Part 1 question appeared on 7 October 2023 in India.

Part 1:

• Who is your idol?

I consider my mother to be my role model as she has contributed immensely to what I am today. What I am today is because of her and I have learned all the important values in life because of her valuable presence in my life.

• Why and how did this person become your idol?

Since the time I gained an understanding of people, I have observed my mom to be the most humble, caring, and affectionate being around me. She has had her life struggles but not even once did she fail in giving my sister and me good guidance and support to become strong individuals. 

• How has this person impacted your life?

Well, I belong to a joint family setup where my mom has catered to the needs of all the family members efficiently without any hesitation. Moreover, she has taught me to value relationships and good manners. Although she never worked outside the house, she always taught us to be financially independent and also ensured that we had a good education and were focused on our goals.

• Do you believe that having an idol makes you a better person? Why?

Of course, it does. I think we learn to value ourselves and the people around us; we respect people and also learn to value others’ opinions. It also helps us to turn towards this person for any advice or suggestion.
