Question: More and more people are using computers and electronic devices to access information; therefore, there is no need for printed books, magazines, and newspapers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Answer:
Hard copies of books, magazines, or newspapers have become redundant nowadays as the content found in them is being accessed on various gadgets by an increasing number of individuals. I completely agree with the given notion because it is far more convenient to use soft copies.
Firstly, soft copies are extremely easy and affordable to use. This is because thousands of articles and books can be accessed on one single device; however, in the case of hard copies, one needs to buy and maintain many of them, which consumes a lot of space and money. For instance, if one downloads the Kindle application on one’s mobile, one can access numerous novels at a very low cost whereas in the case of printed books, this cost is much higher.
Secondly, the electronic media has global reach. Hence, with just a few clicks, a range of reading material can be made available to a vast number of readers by means of the Internet. The print media, on the other hand, has limited access. For instance, if an Indian, while being in India, wants to read the hard copy of a foreign newspaper like ‘The Guardian’ regularly, it will be an impossibility to do so. Finally, electronic content has many features which cannot be enjoyed while reading paper books. To exemplify, while reading an ebook, one can access the inbuilt dictionary and click on any word to understand its meaning. However, if one reads paper books, one has to look for the definitions of difficult words separately in a dictionary.
To conclude, I believe that with the widespread availability and affordability of soft copies, the need for printed media is none whatsoever.
