Part 2

Describe a sportsperson/athlete that you admire

  • Who is the person?
  • What is his/her achievement?
  • Why do you admire him?

One athlete who has always been an inspiration to me is Serena Williams, the renowned tennis player. Her list of achievements is nothing short of remarkable. With 23 Grand Slam singles titles under her belt, along with numerous doubles and mixed doubles titles, she has solidified her status as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. What's more impressive is that she achieved all this while breaking barriers as a Black woman in a predominantly white sport, facing adversity with grace and resilience. As someone who values perseverance, passion, and the courage to challenge norms, Serena Williams embodies these qualities wholeheartedly.

What truly makes Serena Williams admirable is not just her athletic prowess but also her determination and perseverance in the face of challenges. Despite facing criticism, discrimination, and personal setbacks, she has consistently risen above and continued to excel. Her relentless work ethic, mental toughness on the court, and dedication to her craft are qualities that I deeply admire. Moreover, she uses her platform to advocate for important issues, including gender equality and racial justice, amplifying her impact beyond the tennis court.

I remember watching Serena Williams play in intense matches, displaying both power and finesse in her game. Her ability to stay focused under pressure and stage comebacks from seemingly impossible situations is awe-inspiring. Beyond the trophies and accolades, it's her passion for the sport and her unwavering belief in herself that make her a role model for aspiring athletes like myself.

Serena Williams represents not just excellence in tennis but also resilience, determination, and the courage to challenge norms and stereotypes. She embodies the spirit of never giving up, pushing boundaries, and using her platform for positive change, making her an athlete I truly admire and respect.

Part 3

  • What sports do you like?
I have a strong affinity for a variety of sports, but if I were to pick a couple of favourites, they would be tennis and swimming. Tennis has been a long-standing passion of mine due to its blend of strategy, agility, and the social aspect of playing with others. On the other hand, swimming has been a constant in my life because it offers not just a full-body workout but also a sense of serenity and relaxation.
  • Where did you learn to play?
My journey into tennis started during my school years. I was fortunate to have access to a dedicated coach who not only taught the technical aspects of the game but also instilled a love for the sport in me. As for swimming, I began learning at a local pool. Taking lessons over several summers, I gradually built my skills and confidence in the water.
  • Did you do some sports when you were young?
Yes, my childhood was filled with various sports and physical activities. I actively participated in soccer and basketball during school days, enjoying the camaraderie of team sports and the thrill of competition. After school hours, I would often join friends for games and matches, which not only kept us active but also fostered strong friendships.
  • Do you think children need more exercise?
Absolutely, children today could benefit significantly from more exercise and physical activity. With the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles driven by screen time and indoor entertainment, there's a pressing need to encourage and facilitate regular exercise among youngsters. Physical activity not only promotes better physical health, including cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength, but also plays a crucial role in mental well-being, aiding in stress management and promoting a positive mood. Schools, families, and communities should collaborate to provide diverse opportunities for children to engage in sports, outdoor play, and structured physical education programs. Prioritising exercise from a young age sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits and overall well-being.
