Question: The line graph below describes the production of different fuels in the UK from 1981 to 2000. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Answer:
The line graph depicts the trends in the production of petroleum, natural gas, and coal in the UK for a 21-year period, from 1981 onwards. The unit of measurement is a million tonnes [MT] for petroleum and coal and bcm for natural gas.
It is evident that with fluctuating trends, the overall quantity produced by the end of the given period declined substantially for coal, marginally for petroleum, and remained the same for natural gas.
In 1981, with a production of close to 130MT, coal was the most significant source of energy. However, in 1984, it dropped sharply to 50MT, only to skyrocket to 110MT by 1986. Thereafter, coal production decreased steadily to reach an all-time low of less than 40MT in 2001.
Conversely, natural gas, at 70bcm, was the least produced fuel in 1981. But, it kept rising steadily to reach its peak production level of close to 115bcm in 1990. Subsequently, its production kept falling steadily to touch 70bcm in 2001, the same as it was in 1981. Petroleum, in comparison, showed the least variation over the 21-year period. While Its production was a little less than 100 MT in 1981, by 2001, it had fallen to around 80MT.
