Question: The charts below show the proportion of people's total spending in a particular European country on different commodities and services in 1957 and in 2008.

Answer:

The given pie charts represent the percentage of expenditure incurred on different goods and services in a specific nation in Europe, in 1957 and 2008.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the proportion of expenditure on housing and luxury goods increased the most whereas the largest decline was seen in the amount spent on food.

An increment in the amount expended was majorly seen in three categories (housing, luxury goods, and travel/transport). Interestingly, the amount spent on all these three categories had grown by roughly 10%, by 2008. The amount spent on housing in 1958 was 22% whereas it had reached 32% by 2008. Likewise, the expenditure incurred on luxury goods and travel/transport in 1958 was 7% and 8% respectively, but by 2008, it had grown to 17% each.

On the other hand, a substantial downfall was observed in the food category wherein the amount spent slumped by 20% to touch a meager 12% in 2008. In comparison, there was just a slight drop in the expenditure incurred on clothing from 18% in 1957 to 16% in 2008. However, the amount spent on entertainment went down by more than half in the same period (from 13% to 6%).
