Part 2

Talk about a famous person who has a significant influence on younger people. You should say

• Who the person is
• Why you think he/she has an influence on younger people
• How he/she influences young people
• and explain whether or not this person has a positive effect on young people’s lives.

Every now and then, there comes along a person who creates a strong impact on people that cascades down to many generations.

One such person that comes to my mind is the famous Dr. APJ Kalam, the former president of India who has become a superhero for the youngsters of India.

# Coming from a humble family in southern India, he portrayed a spirit of resilience and determination. I think what makes him stand out in the eyes of today’s generation is how, in spite of all the hardships that he faced, he rose to become not only a scientist but also the president of India. His father, a priest in a local mosque, nurtured his thirst for knowledge, making sure that Kalam got everything required to forge ahead in his quest and Kalam left no stone unturned in making sure that his father’s efforts paid off.

#It is his compassion for mankind and sharp analytical mind that has created a big impact on the youngsters who want to follow in his footsteps. The zeal with which he flagged off numerous satellites from the launch pad at Sriharikota was enough to create a rush of adrenaline in the hearts and minds of many young Indians.

#I think it is because of these qualities that India has so many people working and studying in the IT sector. He laid the foundation in the potent young minds of India’s youth that anything is possible if one sets his/her mind on it. With all these achievements, this scientist, par excellence, has motivated youngsters, especially those who are not very well off financially, to believe that the sky's the limit and that dreams can be achieved despite drawbacks.

• Have you ever discussed this famous person with your friends?

Yes. In fact, every time my friends and I discuss famous scientists, he tops the list. The conversation naturally leads to a discussion about his contributions to India's missile and nuclear programs. The fact that he was a globally recognized figure and yet led such a simple life is the biggest motivation that youngsters can get from the story of his life. Some of my friends admired his humble background and inspirational journey, while others focused on his educational initiatives and motivational speeches. We also speculated on the long-term impact of his vision for India’s development and his legacy as the "People's President." Overall, these discussions were engaging and offered diverse perspectives on his contributions and enduring influence.

• In general, do you believe that celebrities have a significant influence on society?

Yes, definitely. I think celebrities are a role model for many and their behavior plays a major role in how people of a society turn out to be. There are numerous examples that prove this. Let’s consider the  movie “Chak de India” in which the hero played the role of a cricket coach for a women’s team so beautifully that it inspired all the sports women of the country to do better than they were already doing.

• What are some positive impacts that celebrities can have on society?

 Celebrities can have several positive impacts on society. First, they often use their platforms to raise awareness about important social and environmental issues, influencing public opinion and encouraging action. For example, Mukesh Ambani’s son, Anant Ambani, has started a huge animal shelter where he pays special attention to all their needs. This action of his has definitely inspired people to do more for animals.

Second, celebrities can serve as role models, inspiring people through their achievements and personal stories. Additionally, they can help destigmatize various issues, such as mental health or social injustices, by openly discussing their own experiences.  For example, actress Deepika Padukone has been vocal about her struggle with depression, helping to destigmatize mental health issues and encouraging others to seek help. 

•  What are some negative impacts that celebrities can have on society?

 One of the negative effects of celebrities that can be seen on people, especially the younger generation, is when people try to replicate their actions. There have been cases where young children thought that if superman could jump from buildings, so could they. Such deeds by immature minds have led to disastrous situations many times. Second, they might promote unrealistic standards of beauty and success, leading to body image issues and low self-esteem among their followers, especially young people. Additionally, their behaviors and lifestyles can sometimes glorify unhealthy habits, such as substance abuse.

• How can celebrities use their influence to bring about social change?

 Celebrities can use their influence to bring about social change in several impactful ways. The best way they can do this is to lead by example. Prime minister Modi is the best example of this. He just went to Lakshadweep and his pictures showing him enjoying the serene beauty of the island as well as snorkeling were enough to divert thousands of tourists to the place. None of the tourism promoters would have had this effect even if they had spent lakhs of rupees on advertising. This diversion of tourism from international destinations to our own Indian ones will definitely help the economy grow.

• Should celebrities be held to higher moral and ethical standards than the general public?

 I think that would be expecting too much from them. While their behavior in public does create an impact, I feel they should have the independence to live their life as they want and not always feel that every move of theirs is being scrutinized. Nevertheless, I also am of the opinion that they should be alert when they are in public. This is because they have significant influence over a large number of people, particularly impressionable youth. Their actions and behaviors can set trends and norms in society, making it important for them to exemplify positive and responsible behavior.
