Question: More and more people are moving away from agricultural backgrounds to relocate to cities in order to look for work. What will be the consequences of this? What solutions can you offer?
Answer:
The trend of people migrating from villages, where the main occupation is farming, to larger towns and metropolitan cities in search of better job opportunities is becoming quite popular. This has resulted in crowded cities with huge pressure on limited urban resources. The Government will have a significant role to play in reversing this trend.
With agriculture being less attractive as a good source of income and the lure of a better standard of living that cities have to offer, youngsters from the rural areas are moving to the cities hoping to make a better life for themselves. However, this has resulted in an increase in population density with resources like housing, water and electricity being limited, and the number of people vying for these amenities surging by the day. A good example of this is the Dharavi slums in Mumbai where people live in dismal conditions with poor sanitation which adversely impacts not only the health of the residents but also their overall quality of life.
The most pertinent solution to this problem would be government intervention to arrest this movement by providing employment opportunities to the rural youth in their villages. For example, they can be given financial aid to establish small-scale industries allied with agriculture which will provide them with good income in their own hometowns. Secondly, governments can also incentivise businesses and corporates to establish their units in smaller towns and villages which will create job opportunities and arrest the movement of people toward the cities.
To conclude, although urbanisation does create many issues, primarily because of the limited resources available, government intervention can reverse this trend by providing individuals with earning opportunities in rural areas itself.
