This IELTS Academic Question Appeared on 20 March, 2023 in India.

Question: Many believe that the goal of one’s career should be to pursue a passion while others feel it is merely a way to earn a livelihood. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Answer:

People have different goals when it comes to the choice of a career. Some seek a vocation which keeps their inner fire ignited while for others, it is merely a means to an end that is to earn enough money to meet one’s needs and perhaps, wants. In my opinion, both are equally important.    

On the one hand, since most individuals spend a substantial part of their lives working, it is important to be involved in something that one is passionate about. Only then would one be assured of job satisfaction. For instance, Soha Ali Khan, a well-known Indian actor, gave up a lucrative career as an investment banker after having studied at the prestigious Oxford University and the London School of Economics, to pursue her passion for acting. 

On the other hand, for a vast majority of working professionals, a career is all about a fat paycheck that guarantees a luxurious lifestyle. Having a steady income, earning a livelihood and financial stability override the idealistic goal of being in a profession that is aligned with one’s interests and guarantees that they remain motivated and satisfied in their professional life. 

In my opinion, money is undeniably very important but so is following one’s passion. Being in a career that satisfies both of these goals would be a dream come true. One might of course have to settle for a simpler lifestyle if one wants to be pursuing a line of work that is close to one’s heart.

In conclusion, being in a profession that one is passionate about and that also provides financial stability is what one dreams of.  Ideally, each one of us should aim to establish a career that satisfies both these crucial needs.
