Question: The bar chart below shows the share of expenditures for five major categories in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan in the year 2009. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Answer:

The bar chart illustrates the apportionment of expenses among five categories, namely, food, housing, travel, healthcare, and clothing. The data pertains to Canada, the US, Japan, and the UK in 2009.

Overall, it is clear that the major portion of the expenditure was on housing and the least was on either healthcare or clothing across the four countries.

It is seen that in the US, at 25%, the outlay on accommodation was the highest whereas, at 4%, it was the lowest on clothing. The UK, Japan, and Canada also allocated the highest amount [around 20 to 24%] to housing alone. Healthcare in the UK accounted for just 2% of expenses while in Canada and Japan, it was double the amount, which was 4% and in the US it was comparatively higher at 8%. The expenditure on clothing was also relatively less at 4%, 5% and 6% in Japan, the UK, and Canada respectively.       

While expenses on food ranged from around 23% in Japan to approximately  13% in the US, transportation expenses were 20%, 18%, 15%, and 10% in Canada, the US, the UK, and Japan respectively.
