Part 2 (Cue Card)
Describe a piece of clothing that you received as a gift. You should say:
– what it was
– who gave it to you
– when you received it
and explain how you felt about receiving it.
One of the most treasured pieces of clothing I’ve ever received is a deep maroon, handwoven Kanchipuram silk saree, which was gifted to me by my mother-in-law on the occasion of my first wedding anniversary. It wasn’t just a piece of fabric — it was a symbol of love, tradition, and the bond we were building as a family.
The saree was a sight to behold. It featured intricate golden zari embroidery, traditional motifs of peacocks and lotus flowers along the pallu, and a broad border that added a royal touch. What made it even more special was the fact that it was custom-ordered from a well-known silk store in Tamil Nadu, a place famous for its rich textile heritage. I later found out that she had selected it months in advance, keeping my complexion and preferences in mind, which truly warmed my heart.
Frankly speaking, when she handed me the gift, I was completely taken aback — in the best possible way. It was wrapped in a satin box with a handwritten note that read, "For the daughter I never had but always wished for." That line alone tugged at my heartstrings.
Wearing the saree on our anniversary celebration, which was a grand family gathering, I felt like I was walking on air. The compliments poured in — some said I looked like a queen, while others asked where I had bought such a beautiful ensemble. My husband, too, couldn’t take his eyes off me, which made me blush like a schoolgirl.
In retrospect, this saree isn’t just another outfit hanging in my wardrobe — it holds memories, sentiments, and the warmth of a relationship that has grown beautifully over time. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best gifts come not wrapped in ribbons, but in thoughtfulness.
Part 3 (Discussion)
Why do people like receiving clothes as gifts?
People often enjoy receiving clothes as gifts because they are both practical and personal. Clothing reflects a person’s style, taste, and personality, so when someone chooses an outfit thoughtfully, it shows they really know you. For instance, my sister once gave me a jacket in my favourite colour and it fit me like a glove — it wasn’t just stylish, but also showed her attention to detail. So, when clothes are gifted with care, they strike a perfect balance between being useful and sentimental.
How important is fashion in your country?
Fashion holds considerable importance in my country, especially among the urban population. It’s often seen as a way to express individuality, stay updated with trends, or even maintain social status. In metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi, people are brand-conscious and often religiously follow international fashion trends. Fashion weeks and influencer culture have only added fuel to the fire. Overall, fashion in India is more than just clothing — it has become a statement of identity.
Do young people and older people have different opinions about fashion?
Absolutely, there’s a clear generational divide when it comes to fashion preferences. Youngsters often lean towards trendy, bold, or experimental looks, while older generations prefer modest, timeless clothing. For example, while teenagers might wear ripped jeans or oversized T-shirts, older adults typically opt for more conservative attire like kurtas or formal shirts. In essence, while both groups value fashion, their approach and comfort levels with trends differ drastically.
Why do some people prefer to wear traditional clothing?
Many people gravitate toward traditional attire because it connects them to their culture and roots. Wearing traditional outfits can evoke a sense of pride, belonging, and identity, especially during festivals or ceremonies. For instance, during Diwali or Onam, people in India proudly wear sarees, dhotis, or lehengas, even if they wear Western clothes otherwise. So, traditional clothing isn't just about fashion — it's a way to honour one’s heritage.
How do clothing styles influence people’s confidence?
The clothes people wear can strongly impact their self-esteem and how they carry themselves. When someone wears something that fits well and aligns with his or her personal style, they naturally feel more assured and presentable. For instance, a well-fitted blazer or a favourite dress can instantly boost a person’s confidence before an interview or presentation. Ultimately, clothing can act as a silent armour that empowers people socially and professionally.
Do you think fashion trends change too quickly these days?
Yes, without a doubt, fashion trends nowadays are evolving at lightning speed. Thanks to fast fashion and social media, new styles go viral almost overnight and become outdated just as quickly. A good example is how Gen Z fashion staples like cargo pants or “cottagecore” aesthetics trend rapidly on platforms like Instagram or TikTok and disappear within weeks. So yes, fashion trends are fleeting now, making it hard for people to keep up without burning a hole in their pocket.
