About the article

Part 2 (Cue Card):

Describe someone you know who buys things at a lower price. You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • How you know him/her
  • How he/she manages to find things at a lower price

and explain why he/she likes to buy things for less.

One person I know who is great at buying things at a lower price is my friend, Manjiri. I’ve known her since college, and we all admire how skilled she is at hunting for the best deals. While the rest of us tend to make impulsive purchases, Manjiri takes her time and always manages to get more bang for her buck.

She is very organized and spends a lot of time researching online before she buys anything. She knows exactly where to look and follows websites and apps that offer discounts and promotional codes. She keeps track of seasonal sales and special events like Diwali and New Year sales, where prices drop significantly. Manjiri is also a part of several online groups where people share tips on where to find bargains. That’s one of her secret weapons for staying ahead of the game when it comes to getting great deals.

The reason Manjiri likes to buy things for less is that she’s a firm believer in being wise with money. She often says, “Why pay through the nose for something when you can get the same quality for a lower price?” For her, it’s not about being cheap but being practical. She prefers to save money on everyday purchases so she can spend it on experiences like travel or investing in things that matter more in the long run.

Manjiri’s approach to shopping is something I really admire. She’s not only smart with her money but also shows how thinking ahead and being patient can really pay off. She truly embodies the idea of being "penny wise, but not pound foolish."

Part 3 (Discussion):

Do you think it’s better to shop at street markets or proper shops?

It depends on what the customer is looking for. Street markets often offer cheaper prices and unique, handmade products, making them ideal for those on a budget or seeking something different. However, proper shops usually provide more reliability in terms of quality and return policies. For example, while buying clothes from a street market can save money, a branded store would ensure better fabric quality and durability. Each has its advantages, but it ultimately depends on the shopper’s preferences and needs.

What should customers be cautious of when shopping online?

When shopping online, customers should be cautious about the authenticity of the website and product quality. Scams are common, so it’s important to check reviews and ratings from other buyers. For instance, some sites may show a high-quality product in the images, but when it arrives, it doesn’t meet expectations. Customers should also be wary of hidden costs like shipping fees or customs charges that can increase the final price. Ensuring secure payment methods is also essential to avoid financial fraud.

How important is the way items are displayed in a shop?

The way items are displayed in a shop plays a crucial role in attracting customers. A well-organized display can make products more appealing and easier to find, encouraging impulse purchases. For example, placing seasonal products near the entrance or highlighting discounts on eye-level shelves often catches shoppers' attention. A cluttered or confusing layout, on the other hand, can drive customers away. Visual appeal and convenience are key in encouraging customers to make a purchase.

Do you believe reputation is important for a business?

Yes, a good reputation is extremely important for a business. It builds trust with customers, which can lead to customer loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals. For example, companies like Apple and Amazon have built strong reputations for quality and customer service, which keeps people coming back. A business with a bad reputation, on the other hand, may struggle to retain customers, even if it offers lower prices. Reputation often determines long-term success in competitive markets.

How has online shopping changed people’s purchasing habits?

Online shopping has significantly changed how people make purchases by offering convenience and a wider range of options. Now, people can shop from anywhere at any time, which has reduced the need for physical stores. For instance, many prefer shopping online for clothes or electronics because they can compare prices across multiple websites in a few minutes. Additionally, the rise of delivery services and easy returns has made online shopping more appealing, influencing people to shop more frequently and impulsively.

Should businesses prioritize low prices or high-quality products?

Ideally, businesses should strike a balance between offering affordable prices and maintaining product quality. However, in the long term, prioritizing quality is more sustainable. Customers are often willing to pay more for durable, reliable products. For example, a well-made pair of shoes may cost more upfront but will last longer, offering better value for money. Low prices might attract customers initially, but if the product quality is poor, it can lead to dissatisfaction and harm the business’s reputation.
