Question: Some people think that all lawbreakers should be taken to prison. In contrast, others believe there are better alternatives (for example, doing work or learning skills in the community). Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Answer:

In addressing the issue of how to deal with lawbreakers, there are divergent opinions within society. While some argue that all offenders should be incarcerated, others contend that there are more effective alternatives, such as community service or skill development programs. I believe that an individualised approach to addressing criminal behaviour may yield more positive outcomes for both offenders and the community at large.

Some advocate the imprisonment of all lawbreakers as a means of punishment and deterrence. Proponents argue that it dissuades potential offenders from engaging in criminal activities. For instance, a study by a leading law school found that areas with higher incarceration rates experienced lower crime rates, suggesting a correlation between imprisonment and crime reduction. Additionally, it is important to protect society by physically removing individuals who have violated the law.

Conversely, an opposing viewpoint suggests that there are more constructive alternatives to imprisonment. One viable option is community service, where offenders contribute positively to society while making reparations for their actions. For example, such programs can have offenders participating in local cleanup initiatives. This not only benefits the community but also encourages a sense of responsibility and accountability among lawbreakers. Moreover, providing vocational training can help reintegrate offenders into society as productive individuals.

In my opinion, the question of whether all lawbreakers should be sent to prison is complex and multifaceted. While imprisonment may serve as a deterrent, alternative measures like community service and skill development programs offer a more rehabilitative approach. Hence, both options should be considered on a case-to-case basis, to ensure a just verdict for both the felon as well as society. 

To conclude, although there are one-sided opinions,  a ‘one glove fits all’ approach should be avoided while dealing with criminals. Striking a balance between punishment and rehabilitation is crucial for fostering a safer and more just society.
