About the article
Part 2 Cue Card
Describe a competition you would like to take part in. You should say:
What kind of competition is it?
What would you do in this competition?
Why does this competition interest you?
Life offers us various opportunities where we try to level up ourselves. Sometimes, it’s by participating in a competition to prepare to win in a particular activity. When I consider levelling up my skills and participating in a competition for it, dance comes to my mind, and I would love to participate in a dance competition. I would choose this competition because I am incredibly fond of dancing, but I have only done it at my level and never participated in a talent show.
In my college, there are different competitions when it comes to dancing. They vary by the style of dancing. For instance, one can choose Western, Indian, or folk dances. I would participate in the western dance competition, preparing a dance performance on three different songs. I would practise a lot so that I do not forget my steps when I’m on stage because my reflexes need to be quick, and since I’m an introvert, there is a chance I might feel a bit nervous dancing in front of the crowd. However, I will try my level best.
This competition particularly interests me because I have never participated in any college fest or stood in front of a crowd. I want to challenge myself and put myself out there to try something new. Participating in this dance competition will improve my skills and make me more confident about my dancing abilities. To encapsulate, participating in this dance competition will be a valuable experience for me, and I hope my practice results in victory.
Part 3 Questions
What kinds of people are competitive?
I think students are extremely competitive because, in our school life, we have been taught the value of progressing, levelling up, and being the best. So, I think students are competitive, and this does not stop at school. Students are also quite competitive in college because of election committees, cultural festivals, and internships. Hence, I think students are the most competitive of all.
What kind of activities/competitions do people like to take part in?
I believe people really like to participate in competitions that allow them to showcase their talent. For instance, it can be dancing, acting, singing, painting, and other activities. In my view, these activities allow individuals to work on their passion and show it to the audience. Moreover, it makes people happy because they have something special to offer to the crowd. Hence, these kinds of activities are the ones that people really enjoy participating in.
What kinds of competitions are popular in your hometown?
I belong to the Northern part of India, and my hometown is Ludhiana, where people are really fond of singing. So that’s the one extremely popular competition in my hometown, and there are a lot of singing competitions every now and then where people of all ages come together, participate, and sing their favourite songs. At the end of the day, it’s not about winning but enjoying the process where everyone is relishing the different songs, whether they’re in Punjabi, Hindi, or any other regional language.
Why do you think there are many competitive programs on TV today?
The reason behind numerous competitive programs on TV is that they build a sense of suspense. For instance, everyone wants to know who will eventually win, and that’s the reason these programs get a great amount of attention from the public. Sometimes, these competitive programs are so stretched that they go on for months before the winner is announced. They deliberately choose a long list of participants so that, over the coming months, they can eliminate people one by one and build up the suspense before the winner is announced. I think they get great TRPs from the audience, which can be another reason why most TV programs are about competition, whether it’s singing, dancing, or acting.
