Part 2

Describe a crowded place you’ve been to.

You should say:

• when you went there?
• where the place is (or was)?
• who you went there with?

and explain how you felt about the place.

Last December, I visited Old Delhi for the first time. I was traveling back from a holiday in Himachal Pradesh, and we stopped over for a couple of days in Old Delhi.

One of the places that I had heard a lot about from my friends was Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi and I was dying to see the place. I had heard that it was one of the oldest markets in Old Delhi, renowned for its historical significance and lively atmosphere. Since we wanted to explore the famous market, my family and I went there during the day. On arrival, I was simply awestruck by the number of people present in the market. In spite of the roads being extremely narrow, they were packed with shoppers and vendors. The market was bustling with activity that I had never seen anywhere before. The vibrant colors and the aromatic smell of spices from the food stalls gave a strange pleasure to the senses.

Chandni Chowk is a diverse market dealing in all sorts of goods ranging from traditional clothes to jewelry to food. The market not only offers a variety of goods but also showcases the cultural diversity of India, with vendors speaking different languages and selling products from various regions of the country. Being a wholesale market, it was difficult to find vendors selling clothes to retailers like us but we were able to find a few and got fantastic deals from them on traditional clothes.

I enjoyed every moment of being in that market. However, it was tiring, mostly because of the slow movement due to an overload of people. This is one place which is going to be on my “must-visit” list for the rest of my life.

Why do a lot of people enjoy going to crowded places?

People love visiting busy locations for a variety of reasons. First of all, these locations frequently provide an exciting, vibrant atmosphere. Because of this, one can get out of the boredom of a monotonous life. In fact, such places can help in bringing in a sense of feeling refreshed. Secondly, busy locations are typically indicative of well-liked sights or occasions, offering a wide range of amusement options, social contacts, and activities. They also offer chances to encounter various customs and civilizations, particularly during festivals or fairs. The festive fairs, especially, re-introduce individuals to traditions long forgotten, which is usually a thrilling experience for many.

Where (or what) would you say is the most crowded place in your city?

I live in New Delhi, which has many places that are jam-packed. Although I think that the whole city is normally swarming with people, if I had to pick one specific place, one that I can think of right now is the Sarojini Market in South Delhi. This market is frequented mostly by young college goers because of the cheap clothes and accessories available there. In fact, during weekends, it’s impossible to shop there peacefully because of the market being crammed and overflowing with shoppers.

Would you say it’s important for a city to have amusement (and/or recreational) facilities?

There are several reasons why it is vital for cities to have recreation centers and avenues for entertainment. Firstly, they enhance the overall quality of life for residents by providing opportunities for relaxation, entertainment, and social interaction. Secondly, facilities like parks, sports complexes and gyms offer spaces for exercise, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, they also reduce stress and improve mental health. Last but not the least, they can boost the local economy as well by attracting tourists and creating jobs.

Why do you think people choose to live in big cities (despite certain problems)?

I think that big cities have a lot more opportunities as far as careers are concerned and that precisely is the reason why most people prefer to live in such cities. Not only do metropolitan cities provide better jobs but they also have better educational institutes as compared to smaller cities and towns. Another attraction is the lifestyle offered, with better avenues for entertainment. These facilities range from shopping malls to movie halls. All of these are major reasons why most people prefer to live in large cities.

How do you think cities overseas are different from those in your country?

Well, to me cities all over the world seem to be the same. Though I have not been to many countries, from whatever I’ve seen on TV and in films, I think cities are over- crowded and bursting at the seams in all countries, the reasons for which could be the same that I mentioned earlier. However, there are notable differences as well. For instance, cities overseas often have more advanced public transportation systems, making commuting easier and reducing traffic congestion. Moreover, the level of cleanliness and organization in public spaces differs significantly, with some cities overseas being more stringent about maintaining hygiene and order.

Would you say urban planning is important?

Absolutely. Without proper planning, the cities would simply collapse under the stress of the burgeoning population.   Proper planning of urban towns and cities provides a framework for developing essential infrastructure such as roads, public transportation, water supply and  sewage systems. This infrastructure is critical for the smooth functioning of a city. It also enhances the quality of life for residents by creating green spaces and recreational facilities. Therefore, the authorities need to keep revamping their plans time and again so that the citizens living there can have a comfortable life. If the people are comfortable, they will be able to work better which in turn will boost the economy of the country.
