Question: Some children nowadays take sports seriously while others play sports in their free time. Is this a positive or negative development?

Answer:

Children nowadays hold varying attitudes towards sports, with some approaching them seriously while others enjoy them during their leisure time. Regardless of their approach, sports can offer a range of benefits to children, such as helping them to develop important skills and even make early career decisions when taken seriously or aiding them in overcoming mental illnesses and building resilience when played for pleasure.

On the one hand, children who play sports  with earnest intent pursue  thousands of hours of training  that can have an immense positive influence on them.  Serious sports players can have a chance to develop their talents and skills, which can lead to opportunities in professional sports. One can  become a sports star at a fairly early age and continue to show their physical prowess and skills. Good examples of this are Tiger Woods, the William sisters and Kobe Bryant.  All these sports personalities  started playing their respective sports as toddlers and went on to become professional athletes.  Hence, children choosing to play sports more intensely has proved to be beneficial.

On the other hand,  playing sports during leisure time can provide children with a range of physical, mental, and social benefits that can help them develop into balanced individuals. For instance, children who play soccer with their friends after school develop a sense of camaraderie and belonging, which can help them reduce stress and anxiety.  Thus, parents and caregivers should encourage children to participate in sports during their free time to help them become well-rounded individuals.

In conclusion, children have different attitudes towards sports presently, which is, in my opinion, a positive development because engaging in physical activities is crucial for their overall well-being, regardless of their level of seriousness.
