Question:
International marketing is sometimes seen as invasive and an intrusion into the country in question. Others argue that it is a necessary and economical form of education in addition to spreading ideas, language and culture. Which point of view do you agree with?
Answer:
Selling goods and services in multiple nations with the objective of making gains is what global marketing is all about. While some consider it to be intrusive, I believe that it has multiple benefits and is essential in modern times when globalisation has become the norm.
Firstly, international marketing necessitates the training and development of personnel in countries where foreign brands enter, particularly when the brands enter into collaborations for setting up their stores in the foreign market. This ensures that the associated employees are well-trained in technology, processes and soft skills. For instance, at Mcdonalds, every employee undergoes a ‘Skills for Life’ training program which focuses on enhancing customer service and leadership skills. Its employees are also encouraged to pursue higher studies by providing them discounts on courses at well-known institutes.
Secondly, when brands enter global markets, they facilitate the exchange of culture which includes language, traditions and cuisine. Take for example the Indian sub-continent where there are multiple restaurants that serve a variety of cuisine ranging from Mexican tacos and Italian risottos to Japanese sushi and Chinese fried rice. We are also exposed to festivals and traditions from the West like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In the Indian market, the digital marketing themes centre around these occasions which has led to a sizeable number of Indians, particularly the millennials and GenZ celebrating these occasions as well. It is clear that along with goods and services, culture also gets passed on, leading to cultural integration at an international level.
In conclusion, it is evident that international marketing has made the world more connected and has resulted in a wide range of economic and social benefits. Not only have the learning opportunities increased, but the exchange of cultural practices, customs and cuisines has also got communities closer and better connected to one another.
