Question: The graph below gives information about United States government spending on research between 1980 and 2008. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Answer:
The given line graph illustrates the trends in research expenditure of the US Government in five different sectors, over a 28-year period from 1980 to 2008.
It is evident that the preferred sector for research investment was health whereas general science received the lowest amount of funds.
In 1980, the US Government spent amounts ranging from approximately $2.5 billion on general science to $8 billion on health which was the highest. Although the outlay on health research dropped slightly to 7 billion dollars in 1984, subsequently, there was an exponential increase and by 2004, the amount had peaked at almost $22 billion. Thereafter, it dropped to almost 18 billion dollars despite which it still remained the sector with the highest outlay on research by the US Government in 2008.
On the other hand, general science was the least favoured sector with the research investment moving from 2.5 billion dollars in 1980 to a meagre 5 billion dollars in 2008.
Comparatively, the trends for space, energy and other sectors were almost similar. They started with 6, 5 and 8 billion dollars and by 2008, these sectors had a research outlay of 9, 7 and 5 billion dollars respectively.
