Question: In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.
Answer:
In various nations, youngsters are motivated to take a year off after completing their secondary education and before commencing higher studies for work purposes or rejuvenation. This conspicuous drift has many pros and cons for the pupils.
Taking a gap year can offer numerous benefits to young people as it helps them to make clear decisions regarding their future careers. Also, students are encouraged to take a much-needed travel break after completing high school, which opens various doors for new experiences and learnings before they start pursuing their higher education. Furthermore, some aspirants can use this time to gain work experience in their interested field, which in turn makes them more familiar with their chosen career choice. Lastly, students can utilise this time to build some specific skills or participate in recreational activities. For instance, pupils can enrol in courses in personality development, computer skills, acting, dancing, etc.
On the other hand, there are some downsides to taking a one-year-long gap, as students might lose their focus and end up being unproductive for the whole year. Moreover, in case a student fails to get a work opportunity, one might end up being one year behind in academics as well as in one’s career. In addition, travelling for a whole year might deviate a pupil from the sole purpose of knowledge and one might not feel interested to get back to studies after a year. For instance, students might prefer to continue travelling to new places instead of coming back and enrolling in higher education.
