Learn to use Clauses

A clause is a group of words including both a subject and a predicate. A sentence can have just one clause or it can have multiple clauses.

There are two types of clauses: Independent clauses and dependent clauses.

An independent clause is one that can stand on its own as a complete sentence.

For example:

• My dog sleeps a lot.
• I love eating chocolate chips

A dependent clause, on the other hand, depends on an independent clause to express meaning clearly.

For example:

• Although he studies hard
• When I grow up

To turn a dependent clause into a full sentence, it needs to be combined with an independent clause.

For example:

• Although he studies hard, he fails to score well in the exams.
• When I grow up, I’ll pursue an acting course.

Clauses can perform three main functions: They can function as adverbs, adjectives, or nouns.
