Complex Sentences

A Complex sentence is a sentence that has an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. 

What is a clause?

A clause is a group of words that includes a subject and a predicate. It might be part of a sentence or a complete sentence on its own. 

For instance: Globalization has led to the growth of industries across the country.

Subject: Globalization

Predicate: has led to the growth of industries across the country

I look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: I

Predicate: look forward to hearing from you

How to structure complex sentences?

A complex sentence is formed by adding one or more subordinate (dependent) clauses to the main (independent) clause using conjunctions and/or relative pronouns.

For instance:

• That literates are governed by illiterates is a painful truth of our society. (Noun clause)
• Those children, who are street smart, are able to handle peer pressure. (Adjective clause)
• Unless you make a mistake, you will never learn. (Adverb clause)
