Subject line is the first thing that pops up when we start writing an email. Subject line is short line on top of the email that tells you about the subject of the email.

In a recent study more a person receives 80-90 emails daily and a good 33 percent people decide whether to read the email now or later just by looking  at the subject line. Hence it gets us to a point where subject lines are very important in drawing a reader’s attention to the mail.

Few tips to write effective subject lines are:

Subject line should not exceed 50 characters or 7-8 words. First 4-5 words draw maximum attention as people use handheld devices as well. So place the important words first.

  • Subject line should be crisp and not contain filler words.
  • Use logical words so that they help in search and filtering
  • Avoid words like “Urgent”! , “Please open” or texts in red may look like spam mails.
  • Incase of string of emails do not use old subject lines.
  • Do not write subject lines that do not match with the email.

Then we come to the CC that means carbon copy and BCC that means Blind Carbon Copy. When you put an email address in the CC or "carbon copy" field it means that a copy of the email you are sending will also be sent to that address. BCC is used when you want to send the privately. Any recipients on the Bcc line of an email are not visible to others on the email.

An email attachment is a computer file sent along with an email message. One or more files can be attached to any email message, and be sent along with it to the recipient. This is typically used as a simple method to share documents and images and also when emails are long.

One thing that we should always do is organize our thoughts and points before writing long emails. We can use rough paper or sticky notes for the same. This prevents back peddling of emails as we do not forget to include important points if we refer our notes while writing emails.
