Germany is one of the most attractive countries for students from India to pursue their studies, especially their Undergraduate Degree and Master’s Degree. The country has very specific provisions for work visas too. They only allow ICTs, or Intra Company Transfers, and Job Secure Visas. The latter is only valid for 6 months, and visa holders must travel to Germany and find a suitable job. It is only then, that the Germany Embassies, provide an extended work permit.

1. What are the best bachelor’s courses available in Germany? How many of them can be pursued by Indians within 10 lakhs?
Firstly, while Germany is a hub of some of the best universities in the world, it is highly advisable that students who are looking to pursue technical courses like Engineering, and management courses such as BBA and MBA, should consider Germany as their top preference.
As for students who wish to pursue courses other than the aforementioned courses, universities in Germany do offer good courses, however, it would be ideal to also consider other countries. This is because there is a higher scope of employment opportunities in Germany for students who have pursued technical and management courses.
Secondly, most of the universities in Germany offer courses that are priced at €8,000 to €13,000 depending on the type of university and course one enrols into. This amount is approximately equal to INR 6,50,000 to INR 10,50,000. In this sense, most universities, private and public, do offer courses that can be pursued by Indian International Students within INR 10 lakhs.
2. What is the total cost of applying for bachelor’s degree courses in Germany?
The total cost of applying for a 4 year bachelor’s degree in a private university in Germany can be approximately INR 36,00,000 (INR 8,00,000 per year). This is an approximate figure and is subject to university’s provisions.
3. Are technical courses like Bachelor’s Engineering free in Germany?
There are certain criteria that one must consider before applying to avail of the provision of free education in Germany. Let’s look into them-
Germany has a two-domain education system, where there are both public and private educational institutions. When it comes to public universities, students need to appear for the German Language Proficiency examination and take up a foundation course. For the foundation course, students need to sit for an entrance exam called TestAS – Test für Ausländische Studierende. It is made up of a Core Test, an OnScreen Language Test, and Subject-Specific Test Modules. This test is for bachelor’s courses.
Only after the successful completion of the two, students are enrolled in public universities.
As for Master’s degree courses, depending on the university you pick in Germany, you will be required to provide either a certificate from a German language competence test or an English language competency test. Furthermore, there are multiple tests that one may have to sit for depending on their course. They are-

In private universities, the process is rather simple. One can check the eligibility criteria, and upon meeting them, one can apply for the courses. However, students still have to do a foundation course.
It is worth noting that in private German universities, free education is not provided unlike in public universities where either the courses are free of cost or subsidized.
4. What is a “Studienkolleg”?
Studienkolleg is the German name of the foundation course that students have to mandatorily attend for almost a year if they wish to study in Germany.
In this course, international students are given instructions and education on the same leveled field as German students. This is done to ensure that all students have received a similar kind of education at the previous levels.
5. Are Public Universities in Germany good? Are they better than Private Universities?
Yes. Public universities in Germany are not only at par with private universities, most of them are better than private universities.
6. How can one apply for the different courses at Bachelor’s level in Germany from India?
It is a rather simple process. Each university has its own admission application process and portal. Students can log into the website of the university they wish to apply for, and fill out the application form.
Upon confirmation of admission from the university, the students are provided with an offer letter, which can be used to apply for a visa.
7. What are the basic eligibility criteria for admissions to Bachelor’s degree courses in Germany?
Some of the essential eligibility criteria for admissions to bachelor’s degree courses in Germany are –
- For private universities, students must have secured a minimum of 50% marks in their previous examinations.
- For public universities, as mentioned above, students have to sit for a few entrance exams. In addition to that, students need to have a German Language Certification.
- The education of the students should have been carried out in the English language. In this regard, it is advised that students appear for the IELTS as it is an added advantage to the student’s profile.
- For visa purposes, the students must make a block account with INR 9,00,000 kept aside for the initial year.
8. Is IELTS required to study in Germany? What is the minimum band score needed?
IELTS is not a mandatory requirement in Germany, which means that there is no minimum band score requirement.
However, as advised by Immigration Expert Randeep Chopra, it is always advisable to appear for the IELTS. This helps add points to the student’s profile, as it is mandatory for students who are applying for courses in Germany to have completed their previous education in English. It also helps in the speedy processing of the student’s visa.
9. Do we need to have a German Language Certificate to study in Germany?
Yes. It is a requirement for Public Universities in Germany where students can avail free of cost education. In this regard, it is important for students to score a minimum of B2 (B1, A2, and A1 are higher) to be eligible for admission to public universities.
What is the total average cost of living in Germany as a bachelor’s student?
The average cost of living in Germany as a bachelor’s student can be averaged out at €500 – €600. This is because the cost of housing is approximately €300 and the remaining amount of €200 to €250 is used for living expenses. This is approximately INR 46,000 to INR 50,000 per month.
10. Can a student find a job in Germany while pursuing their bachelor’s degree? What kind of jobs are available?
Yes. It is a common practice for Indian international students to work in different sectors while pursuing their bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Germany. Most of the jobs available to students are Blue Collar jobs. Students can work in restaurants and convenience stores, etc. Students are allowed to work for 20hrs per week. However, students are not allowed to work during the first 6 months of their arrival in Germany.
11. What type of visa will be issued to an Indian bachelor’s student in Germany? Can I travel to other European countries with that visa?
A Long-Term Student Visa will be issued to an Indian bachelor’s student in Germany, and with this visa, a student can travel to all 26 countries which are a part of the European Union.
