Eliminate Reasons for Low Score In IELTS

Before a student embarks on a journey to learn new skills, it is important to understand where they stand. Without having this knowledge, it’s not possible to judge whether one has improved. It is no different for our students as well. Many students come to us after attempting IELTS multiple times, with a gloomy heart and a question in mind – why do they not improve despite putting effort – which they do either through self-studying or a structured course. 

One of the very big reasons behind this is that, they do not have the knowledge about the area in which they lack. This directly affects their preparation because students don’t know how to diversify their time. Even when they come to us, they are clueless about whether it is reading, writing, listening or speaking that they need help with. All they say is that they don’t know why their score is not improving. 

Here are some of these common issues:

• When it comes to IELTS Speaking, students lack in three core areas – Lexical Resources, Structure of Speech, and Flow Maintenance. While the latter two are related, the first one is a problem that haunts many as they lack the vocabulary to speak about the basic topics – which are usually the IELTS Speaking Topics.
• In the IELTS Reading, most people falter because the normal reading speed of someone whose native language is not English is slow. This is a common problem, and almost everyone lacks the correct technique to solve this problem.
• The most common problem when it comes to the IELTS Writing Task is that we don’t know when to stop. When a topic is presented to us, we feel an overwhelming rush of ideas, or an underwhelming dry spell. One feels like an absolute mess when this happens.
• While most people have the IELTS Listening Task under control, some do face issues, and rightfully so. The most common one being that while listening to the audio, the students don’t know what they are looking for.

The program starts with understanding the level at which a particular student is, and the kind of problems they are facing. This is called the Diagnostics Test. It is conducted online, and each student has to sit through a shortened version of an actual IELTS test. The Listening, Writing and Reading Sections are shorter than the real IELTS exam, while the IELTS Speaking test is an exact replica of the actual test. Students have to sit through the exam, and the instructor even provides a band score for the Speaking and Writing Diagnostics Test. The result helps the instructors to have the essential information required to make a study-teaching plan for the student. Additionally, this also allows the student and teacher to keep a tab on the progress, and make improvisation, wherever required.

Build a Skill-based IELTS Curriculum

Before going any deeper, one needs to understand the general practice followed in the IELTS preparation industry. Most institutions follow a prescribed syllabus, usually from Cambridge. This syllabus is taught from head to toe, with no scope of flexibility or adaptability offered to the students. At Yuno Learning, the syllabus has been created in-house. It is one of the most effective syllabus that has been churned out of years of experience brought to the table by our expert instructors. 

How did we design it?

It was designed by our Academic Head, Sunita Kadian, who has more than 3 decades of experience teaching the English language. The syllabus was, then, handed over to each and every instructor, who were then trained by Sunita Kadian. Each instructor is given the full flexibility to improvise to fit the needs of the students. Additionally, the teaching fraternity meets on a regular basis to make sure the curriculum is up to date.

Why an original syllabus?

Sometimes we get students who need more help in writing, or have really bad grammar, or use wrong tenses in the IELTS Writing Task 2. Having an in-house syllabus helps us make extra room to address each and every need of the students. Plus, an additional benefit also comes where it allows the instructors to make the syllabus interesting, instead of making the students cram the same syllabus over and over again for years. 

Think of it this way, if you have only learnt how to write a letter to the landlord to terminate the rental agreement, but in the exam they are asked to write a letter of resignation. What will you do? These are two drastically different letters, and you have only been given the information and strategy for one, it will automatically turn into your worst nightmares leading to a sudden dip in your IELTS band score.
